A good question about Peter Knox came up on Twitter! It got the brain going, and we thought we'd bring the topic over here for some discussion.
For starters, how old do we think Peter Knox could be? The text doesn't outright state his age, but some of the details are there for some guesses...

"Knox had been making regular visits like this since he’d finished his doctorate and begun working for the Congregation. Much had changed in their world since World War II, and the Congregation’s administrative structure had adjusted to the times. " ^ Closest indicator of his age. Based on him being in the Congregation and having finished his doctorate at around WWII era, I'd put him in his 80's by the time we run into him during this series. Hard to know though, there was an indicator that he had a thing for Diana's mother (Rebecca). Who I would imagine if alive would be in her late 50's-60's. I'm not suggesting he was a dirty old man, just maybe drunk with the possibility of having her powers? Also, Stephen was significantly older than her (the reference to the May/December romance)... Stephen guessed Diana to be about 10 years younger than he was when he was visiting. The math gets a little murky with the time travel. But in 1979-80 (she was 2-3?), Stephen would be in his 40s. So perhaps Stephen and Peter were the same age (Stephen maybe a bit younger)? (counts fingers) !!! lol Edit to add: I just read what I wrote and thoroughly confused myself! Made sense when I was typing it!

I get what you are saying...although I did grab a calculator myself. That could make sense that Stephen and Peter could have been around the same age (with Stephen being a bit younger). It's not out of the question then that Peter could have been interested in Rebecca romantically, but you bring up a good point that he may have been enamored with Rebecca's powers and gifts more than anything! Edit: I agree that the details provided put Peter Knox in his 80s.

But... WWII, how much was he involved in Philippe's downfall? Do you figure that as a possibility? Because of the continuation of the passage I put in above:
"...Much had changed in their world since World War II, and the Congregation’s administrative structure had adjusted to the times. With the transportation revolution of the nineteenth century, trains and roads allowed a new style of governance, with each species policing its own kind rather than overseeing a geographic location. It meant a lot of traveling and letter writing, both possible in the Age of Steam. Philippe de Clermont had been instrumental in modernizing the Congregation’s operations, though Knox had long suspected he did it more to protect vampire secrets than to promote progress."
Was Knox instrumental in Philippe's demise?

Jumping in late, but I agree that Knox was in his 80s when we meet him but I also think Knox may have been the equivalent of a junior diplomat when Philippe met his demise. He was probably around and may have heard some inside gossip but any direct involvement was minimal. Don't forget, he knew nothing of Benjamin until the conversation with Gerbert about the letter.

You are probably right. I'm sure the information he garnered didn't help with his disdain towards the vampires over the years. So by the time he met Benjamin and found him to be an ally (by being an enemy to the de Clermonts) he was primed for action.

I always imagined about his 70's, although from reading the above 80's sounds about right. I agree, i don't think there was much direct involvement with Phillipe though.
