Something occurred to me whilst re-reading 'Shadow of Night'. In this installment, we are introduced to the unnamed most intimate ritual of vampire mating, possessing one's mate's innermost thoughts and secrets via drinking from the vein nearest the heart. The first time Matthew performed this on Diana was because he suspected her of hiding something from him but declares that he saw "You. Only you." and Diana's witch's kiss settles that it was Benjamin's scent from an ignorant encounter among the many she'd come home doused in that had aroused his suspicion. Diana, was, in fact, hiding something, however: her bargain with the goddess for Matthew's life. How did that evade such a revealing act? Did he not drink enough? Could it be that the act exclusively picks up what the subject is hiding at the moment it's performed and at that moment the bargain wasn't anywhere near her thoughts? It can't be the latter that would defeat the purpose. Though, I'm glad that's not how he found out despite that he was performing with her permission and thus volunteered whatever he found. That she chose to reveal the bargain of her own conviction (though not until 'The Book of Life' hence the spoiler tags) was much stronger. I was proud of her. I'd have liked to know what exactly he did see that he defined as being purely her.
